There are currently six libraries for MAME, each with different version requirements and availability: MAME Portable - all the old portable MAME core, and some of the new ones. This includes MAME 0.121 with portable and m2c plugins. The version number is the slighly higher minor version number. MAME 0.119 - the original MAME 0.121 release. This is the core that many people will see on uncurated sites. It is very unstable and, although it works, it produces a lot of artifacts and has generally poor emulation quality. MAME 0.121 - the portable version. This is a more polished and mature emulator, known also as the "old" version of MAME. MAME 0.121 contains many bugfixes, better quality sprites, and more error messages. However, MAME 0.121 ports have also major issues, usually related to the graphics and sound engines, and none are fully playable (sound tracks usually only hear a static noise). MAME 0.122 - the most recent stable release. This contains most of the functionality of MAME 0.121 besides the graphical updates. MAME 0.124 - The alpha version for 0.122, including most of its features but also many buggy. This can be considered an unstable release, and is recommended only for developers, mods, and testers.
